Sukanta Bhattacharya was one of the most honored poets of Bangla literature. He was called 'Young Nazrul' and 'Kishore Bidrohi Kobi', a reference to the great rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for Sukanto's similar rebellious stance against the tyranny of the British Raj and the oppression by the social elites through the work of his poetry.He was born in 15 August 1926 at his uncle's house in Kolkata. His ancestral home in the village Unshiya in Kotalipara, Gopalganj, Bengal (now part of Bangladesh). His father, Nibaran Bhattacharya, was in the book selling business in Kolkata.He was a communist and was a worker of the party.His work is deeply marked and influenced by his communist experience.Prodigious Sukanta's poetry was published in magazines while he was alive, and except for chhArpatra his books were all published posthumously.chharpatra, ghum nei, purbabhas, abhijAn, mithe-kara are his well known works.He died in 13 May 1947 of tuberculosis at Jadavpur (Kolkata) at a very young age of 20.
